Supplements for cardiovascular health
Heart-health supplements are one of the more rigorously studied areas in nutrition. These are the compounds with randomised trial evidence for meaningful cardiovascular endpoints — not just biomarker changes.
The short list
Essential fats (EPA/DHA) that support cardiovascular and brain health.
A compound essential for cellular energy production.
A fat-soluble vitamin that directs calcium to bones rather than arteries.
A highly absorbable form of magnesium bound to glycine.
A precursor to glutathione, the bodys master antioxidant.
A conditionally essential amino acid supporting heart, brain, and muscle function.
An amino acid that converts to arginine, supporting nitric oxide production.
Frequently asked
- Does omega-3 really help the heart?
- For people with elevated triglycerides or existing cardiovascular disease, high-EPA omega-3 has meaningful event-reduction data. For otherwise-healthy adults the effect on hard endpoints is smaller but still measurable.
- Should I take CoQ10 on a statin?
- CoQ10 is reasonable to trial if you've developed muscle symptoms on a statin. Evidence is mixed but downside risk is low. Discuss with your prescriber.
- Is vitamin K2 worth taking?
- Vitamin K2 (MK-7) directs calcium to bones and away from arteries. The arterial-calcium data is promising but still emerging — most relevant for people at higher cardiovascular or osteoporosis risk.
